I have been a major Sookie Stackhouse fan for years. I began reading Charlaine Harris’s series, then called the Southern Vampire Mysteries, since before book four came out, and have read them all in order. I was puzzled when I found out that HBO was going to originate a TV adaptation of it. Why this particular series? Why not Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series? (It would have been profitable, what with all of the sex and all.) There were others as well, like Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld and MaryJanice Davidson’s Queen Betsy series — all of which have the erotic tones that HBO would have loved. So why this book series? Now I know why, but more on that later.

I very grand enjoyed season one. It was very faithful to Wearisome Until Shaded, except that shrimp characters like Tara and Lafayette were expanded, and you glean everyone’s point of idea, not impartial Sookie’s. Also, Bill has more depth here, and you leer things from his point of understanding, and you understand him better. Other storylines were added, like the emphasis on “V” addiction, which makes sense. Season two has taken things to a whole other level and I fancy it so far. I can’t wait for the blu-ray release! From the very beginning, the indicate has very sexually explicit scenes, most of which centered on Jason’s exploits, and some violence as well, with a colossal deal of emphasis to vampire hatred as the unusual develop of southern racism/segregation. Season two takes things further, with gore and dread replacing the sex (there’s quiet plenty of it though), and the fledging out of characters like Eric, Tara and Lafayette (whose death does not happen in the TV series) . MaryAnn is the mysterious creature that makes a brief appearance in Living Humdrum in Dallas, but is expanded on the TV version to the point that she almost takes over the entire present. Jessica, Bill’s “daughter,” puzzled me at first. What’s the purpose to this character? But I like her now, especially after Hoyt becomes her fancy interest. And I care for the emphasis on vampire makers, like Lorena and Godric, the latter of whom moved me almost to tears in the last episode that he’s in (plus, the actor who plays him is totally hot) . I don’t want to destroy it for people who don’t have HBO and have to wait for the DVD or blu-ray release, but, in spite of the departures from the books, it’s better than season one.

The actors are tall. Ann Paquin has grown on me as Sookie, British hottie Stephen Moyer is astounding as Bill, and I finally like Alexander Skarsgard as everyone’s accepted vampire poor boy Eric. I am also enjoying Sam Trammel (Sam Merlotte), Rutina Wesley (Tara), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette), Michelle Forbes (MaryAnn Forester) and Ryan Kwatten (Jason Stackhouse) . I am also enjoying the actors who play Andy Belleflour and Hoyt for the humorous relief they supply. (Andy is hilarious as the drunken out-of-work cop who witnesses the orgies and general outlandish behavior and no one believes him.) All in all, if you’re a spacious fan of the books, then you won’t want to miss this present. No expressionless moments throughout the hour-long series. I cannot wait for season three and season two is not even over yet! And I stare why HBO decided to adapt this particular book series. They must’ve seen the potential for character development and the southern setting on the itsy-bitsy cloak. Expansive job!

I started reading this series when book 1 fair came out. What can I say, I like vampire books. I really liked Season 1 on HBO. The deviation the present took that bothers me is that Bill killed Longshadow, not Eric, because that could really become problematic later on.

Bill seems to be becoming one dimensional on HBO, he is nearing sainthood. Why would Sookie ever dump him, or date any of the many people she later dates in the books if he is a saint???

In the books, you eventually eye that Bill really has less human feelings/emotions than Eric and other fancy interests of Sookie. ‘Book Bill’ is too self-absorbed to even gaze Sookie’s problems a total change from HBO’s ‘Saint Bill’.

When Eric got to establish Sookie in Book 1 she warmed up to him, which gives an opening for a romantic change for Sookie—-makes sense, especially when your “worship (Bill) ” honest stands there and is ready to let you die. Also, when someone you admire impartial keeps lying and keeping secrets, like ‘Book Bill’ you eventually say (even if you care for them) enough is enough time to go on–and GEE maybe he is not ‘the one’.

The scheme the HBO series is unfolding if Sookie leaves Bill and goes to Eric or anyone else she might objective seem like a [...]_itch. If she objective stays w/ Bill the whole series, then it will probably gather boring—or completely deviate from the books storylines, as most of the anecdote lines have a connection to Sookie’s appreciate interests at the time. Either procedure making Bill a saint, in the long hurry, will not benefit the series.

The subplots are fine—but it would be nice for them to pause SUBPLOTS and not overpower the expose like this season.

Long and Short—- Yes, I have preordered season 2–would have preferred less subplots and less of ‘Saint Bill’. One of the best books in the series (and one that has an impact on the rest of the book series) is coming up. It involves Eric losing his memory. I honest hope that HBO can collect over the total ‘Saint Bill’ thing before that books state line is covered, and follow a broad tale from a sizable writer, so that the rest of the main set lines from the books can be frail.

Species by species footage and facts of raptors including owls. The footage is impartial amazing. Tips on finding birds and observing birds and you can’t beat the effect of the DVD.

This dvd is one of the best nature and bird watching dvds around. I have seen “Winged Migration” and this is objective as favorable if not better. This one is superb for the hardcore enthusiast but also a nice introduction for casual bird people, or even for kids that want to learn a unique hobby.

Very captivating footage of some of the most modern creatures around. TWO THUMBS UP!!

Director Christine Jeffs manages to strike an evenhanded tone in her biopic “Sylvia,” which deals with the last few years in the life of poet Sylvia Plath. Jeffs doesn’t site all the blame for Ms. Plath’s suffering, deep depression and subsequent suicide on Ted Hughes, (which many Plath fans do), nor does she glorify the poet’s damage. However, the complexities of Plath’s psyche, illness, motivations and goals, the intricacies of her relationship and marriage to Hughes, and her roles as mother and poet, are short shrifted. I don’t know if this flaw is due to the limitations of the medium or to problems with the screenwriting and direction. This is a film about a woman with a suicidal past who writes poetry, loves, marries, becomes gloomy, shocked and jealous, has children, is “deceived,” falls deeper into depression and turns on the gas – the main character fair happens to be Sylvia Plath. I really would have liked to have seen more of an emphasis given to Plath’s writing and treasure of literature. Ms. Plath also placed ample importance on parenting her children and often found worthy pleasure in being a mother and a wife, as well as a poet. This is not evident in the movie.

Sylvia Plath’s fable is a desperate and tragic one. However, the movie dwells on her depression to the extent that it appears the writer never had a tickled moment after her honeymoon. Even the film’s employ of color reflects this sad mood. Plath dresses in warm colors up until her wedding, after which her clothes and the ambient colors become darker and darker. Her writer’s block is clearly shown but her periods of indecent productivity, especially toward the ruin of her life, when, writing through the nights she poured poetry onto the page with almost manic energy, are not really portrayed. All the biographies I have read on Sylvia Plath discuss the joy she found in motherhood. Her exhaustion caring for two shrimp children, taking care of her home and writing is evident throughout the movie, as it was in steady life. But nowhere is Ms. Plath shown laughing and playing with her children, with the exception of a brief Christmas scene. Her shrimp daughter is almost always shown toddling leisurely her mother, a bewildered, dusky expression on her face. Nor does the movie indicate Ms. Plath’s ample struggle to live, fighting against her overwhelming depression. The contrasts between happiness and deep sorrow, energy and listlessness, struggle for control over her demons and loss of control are strangely absent. The character of Sylvia Plath ultimately comes across as a relatively passive figure, at the mercy of her mental illness, whose moods are closely tied to her husband’s demonstrations of affection and attention.

Gwyneth Paltrow does a astonishing job, as always, given the material she had to work with. Her performance is sensitive and intense. The few times she recites poetry, including a fabulous scene where she does a microscopic bit from Chaucer’s “Wife of Bath” in Middle English, are incredible. Daniel Craig as Ted Hughes is respectable, capturing the magnetic charisma of the poet, his bewilderment as his relationship falls apart, and his careless indifference toward Sylvia’s suffering and his children’s vulnerability. Blythe Danner, Paltrow’s mother in valid life, is fine in the role of Plath’s mother and Michael Gambon does an amazing job as the sympathetic downstairs neighbor.

I have been a titanic fan of Sylvia Plath’s poetry for many years and have read some obedient biographies on the poet as well as work by Ted Hughes. This is a difficult review for me to write because I want to be impartial about the film, which does oversimplify Ms. Plath’s life. We net the facts but not the depth. There is a grand lack of scope here. If one is not familiar with Plath and her work I am not certain that the movie would snarl with more than a melodramatic overview of her life. As stated above, the acting is resplendent and the photography appropriately fretful. For a more comprehensive experience I would suggest reading some of Ms. Plath’s exceptional poetry, if you haven’t already, before viewing the film.

I have to give the folks gradual this movie credit for not situation too mighty on the melodramatic aspects of Sylvia Plath’s short life. But the fact is that her epic really was very melodramatic throughout, and “Sylvia” tries too hard to contemplate past that.

Too abominable, because it’s otherwise a tall movie. All the essentials of Plath’s relationship with Ted Hughes are presented, with fair enough details of her early life filled in through dialogue to give even unusual viewers an notion of the shrinking poet’s tale. The cinematography is tremendous throughout, and the writers were surprisingly careful to avoid taking sides in the peaceful ongoing did-Ted-drive-her-to-suicide debate. (Both are portrayed as passionate lovers but abominable spouses, which is probably the truth.) And yes, the producers were legally barred from using all but a few random lines of Plath’s poetry in the script, but I didn’t procure that very defective – anybody can recite poetry, and having Gwyneth Paltrow do so won’t necessarily give you a better appreciation for its meaning anyway.

What is more troubling is the lack of any concern to illustrate what inspired Plath or how her work impacted the last few years of her life. Even “The Bell Jar” warrants only one mention, and that almost in passing. This is acceptable in the context of a tale that seems far more focused on her relationship with her husband than anything else, but at the very least the movie’s title probably should have reflected that.

Still, it’s an exciting, if appropriately bleak, sight at one of the more tragic marriages in literary history.

Since I purchased almost all of the modern 30 diminutive episodes of “Gunsmoke” from Columbia House (four per tape at $25), I am quiet disappointed that this astonishing series was not released in sequence of broadcast, fair as it was released by Columbia House.

“Gunsmoke” was so mighty more than entertainment 50 years ago. Families would net around the “Chilly Blue Fire” to fraction the stories (and morality tales) told by the actors and writers. Fifty years ago I was six years venerable, and obviously not cognizant of the stout leap forward – into ‘adult’ territory – which “Gunsmoke” represented.

When I began watching the Columbia House 30 miniature episodes, always in order of first broadcast ten years ago, I was amazed at the quality of the productions and the scheme that the totality had survived across (then) 40 years. Awed.

By selecting the ‘best’ of “Gunsmoke” the marketers imply that the rest of the series was like every other series on TV: there were only a few episodes worth watching, considerable less, worth BUYING. My view: that is not correct.

This is one series that tranquil deserves to be watched, and remains “must peruse” TV after 50 years.

I would benefit the release of “Gunsmoke” by seasons, impartial as “Have Gun Will Fade” is being released.

“Gunsmoke” was the primal American story brought to sad and white TV. It deserves to be seen as it was broadcast, not simply because the nostalgia quotient is higher but because it remains a seminal series.

The definitive episodic TV Western.

As most fans of “Gunsmoke” probably know, this region and the second plot, representing the latter half of the series, include some very ample episodes drawn from throughout the show’s 20 year race, but are not season sets. But what you do regain are 17 very splendid looking episodes from the first nine seasons, primarily the Chester Goode (Dennis Weaver) years, with the last episode introducing Festus (Ken Curtis) . What distinguishes this collection is the inclusion of some truly gigantic DVD extras, from John Wayne’s introduction of the first episode to Dennis Weaver’s home movies made on the space, as well as other gargantuan bonus material. The inclusion of so many extras should reach as no surprise as this collection was produced by Paul Brownstein, who was also tedious the broad DVD releases of “The Dick Van Dyke Demonstrate.” Considering the age of the episodes, it’s fantastic to hear so many episode commentaries, not only from the likes of stars James Arness and Dennis Weaver, but from well-liked guest stars like Angie Dickinson, George Kennedy, Adam West and Barbara Eden, all of whom fraction unbelievable memories of the expose and their early days as actors working in the relatively unique medium of television. Both James Arness and Dennis Weaver took active roles in this DVD release, with Mr. Arness providing audio introductions for every episode and bonus item, and Mr. Weaver sharing his “Gunsmoke” memories.

While it would have been preferred to have stout season sets of “Gunsmoke” (and, who knows, maybe this will eventually happen), Paramount has delivered a mostly big release.

I highly recommend this is purchased for any limited one who shows an interest in dance. We bought this DVD for our daughter when she turned 2; now almost three she has amazed us by the plan she uses the dances Paula and Zoe demonstrate; particularly ballet. At her nursery they are convinvced she goes to dance classes as she performs what she’s learnt so beautifully! It’s all done in simple gradient steps and shows a suited variety of types of dance as well as ethnic dance – well worth the import to Brighton, England.

I recently bought Zoe’s Dance Moves for my niece’s 3rd birthday. She LOVES it. The different dances preserve her attention and up and challenging the whole time. The nice surprize is that my 7 year ancient niece who thinks she is too passe for Sesame Street is mesmerized by it too. She dance apt along with Paula and Zoe. It nice to have a DVD they can both agree on and are up dancing to vs. sitting and watching. And as always with Sesame Street the multi-ethnicity is vast.

It was an uncommon year. 1976 saw the release of Logan’s Hurry with its occasionally heavy handed parable about the youth culture, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards gathered steam at the box office and included a trailer for some movie called Star Wars. Along came Nicolas Roeg with his arthouse science fiction fable and totally mystified everyone. David Bowie is perfect as the alien in this classic science fiction film. He’s left his arid, dying planet and advance to Earth in hopes that some of “his” inventions could gain enough capital so that he can win resources from our planet to place his.

Unfortunately, Bowie’s character pretends to be human all too well–he’s sucked into the very flaws that cripple humanity. He becomes a victim of our culture rather than master of it. Roeg’s film is fragmented and spooky (particularly the scene where Candy Clark discovers that Bowie’s character has various attachments to form him seem human) . The visually unsettling photography and editing serve bring an edge to the film. Roeg manages to fuse science fiction to his European art sensibilities very well. In fact, Man is probably Roeg’s most much film outside of Don’t Observe Now his gothic engage on the dread film.

I’ll gain to the point about the disagreement between the safe Anchor Bay release and the Criterion release. Both studios had released this film for the first time (there was a previous Fox-Lorber bare bones edition) . The Criterion edition looks sharper with better clarity and richer color than the Anchor Bay edition. Detail is better on the Criterion edition and there appears that the Anchor Bay release wasn’t digitally restored as the colors are a bit muted and dilapidated in some sequences. Both feature the beefy length European sever that Roeg intended for the US market as well. The 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound mix for the Anchor Bay is righteous to the 2.0 new soundtrack on the Criterion. The entire sound system is primitive nicely but support in mind this was never meant to sound as aggressive as the 5.1 ES (or 6.1) releases of more novel movies.

As to the extras, both have beneficial extras. The Anchor Bay features a short documentary “Watching the Alien” (a mountainous play on words related to one of Bowie’s songs as well as the film), the modern theatrical trailer, TV spots, talent bios, a favorable poster and unexcited gallery as well as Paul Mayersberg’s recent screenplay in DVD-ROM format. All of these are gargantuan extras to be determined and are included on the second disc which allows for a higher bit rate for the movie and, hence, very apt video as well. A ticket about the packaging–Anchor Bay’s edition of the movie was magnificent but came in a very flimsy case with a pace over sleeve. When you took that off the movie and extras disc were held by flimsy plastic holder. The exterior had an image from the unique poster and there was a short booklet included as well discussing the film. While normally I could care less about packaging it does bug me when it’s as poorly designed as this one which seems like a compromise between an Amray (hard plastic) and snapcase (what Warner faded until recently for all their releases) . It doesn’t stand up to wear and promenade well and the discs could potential plunge out.

Criterion’s transfer is a recent, restored high definition digital transfer supervised by Roeg (which explains the color corrections compared to the Anchor Bay edition which was pulled from restored negatives but done three years before) . The audio commentary isn’t fresh but is from 1992 (I maintain it may be the same one on the fresh Criterion laserdisc release) and features Roeg and star David Bowie recorded together and Buck Henry recorded on his maintain. The commentary track is exceptional but that will only matter if commentary tracks are essential to you. Some folks never listen to them and never assume more than a cursory sight at the extras. The second disc includes profitable audio interviews with May Routh who designed the costumes and production designer Brian Eatwell. There’s another audio interview with author Walter Tevis recorded in 1984 in which Tevis discusses his recent and the film. There’s some spacious stills, behind-the-scenes photos dominate these and were taken by David James. This allotment features an introduction by James. The trailers are included as is Tevis’ unique recent. Finally there’s a 28 page notable essay by Graham Fuller about the film and an appreciation of novelist Tevis by another novelist Jack Matthews. Criterion’s packaging has the movie in a hard Amray two disc holder and, in turn, within a cardboard veil that houses the movie and the original. It’s very nice and will stand up a better to wear and trudge.

Both versions have their strong points. If you purchased the Anchor Bay edition and are gay with the exceptional transfer, then you may not want to remove this fresh place. The crisper, sharper images and richer colors for the Criterion is the strong selling point while the audio 5.1 on the Anchor Bay has nice presence and sounds better than the audio mix for the Criterion edition. The extras for both are quite beneficial although the commentary track gives the Criterion edition the edge in my mind. The image quality and color are better on the Criterion Edition of “Man” but the Anchor Bay remixed sound has the edge for audio. If you don’t have the Anchor Bay or are looking to upgrade to a better looking portray, the Criterion is the stronger of the two. Criterion wins by a nose due to the extra featurettes and audio commentary as well as the Roeg supervised transfer.

Previously available on DVD, this widescreen (enhanced for 16×9 TVs) edition looks sharper, the super DTS surround sound is THX celebrated and there’s a unique, engaging 24 little featurette, “Watching the Alien.”

Slow challenging and beautifully photographed, this movie adaptation is faithful in theme to Walter Tevis’s unusual. An alien being, disguised as a human, comes to earth to examine a diagram to assign his home planet from turning into an arid wasteland. He funds this project by designing inventions worth gazillions and becomes bigger than Bill Gates. Unfortunately, he also becomes noxious by our earthly ways and sinks into a mystical malaise of depression and alcohol. A sweet and chirpy Candy Clark lures him into an affair that, strangely, doesn’t abet.

This hypnotic and interesting film long ago achieved cult place. More than anything, it’s a visual meditation about an outsider, stymied by material success, who is on a bound serve to a home that cannot in fact be reached. (Hey, who can’t characterize to that? )

Another ample Season of Stargate SG-1. If you are here, then I don’t have to state you that! I always search everywhere on the internet and try to come by some arrive explore about DVD releases. As with the prior seasons, the format is Widescreen anamorphic – 1.78:1 and the audio is Dolby Digital 5.1. Disappointingly, MGM’s position had very limited information. I especially wanted to pick up out what the “Director Series” is in the extras. I could not come by out too remarkable. Only one website had this description: The Director Series features give insight into the working day of the director on issues such as script development, prop and position creation.

Stargate SG-1, to me, wasn’t exactly what I’d near to put a question to from my accepted point to. But the exact disappointment for me was the murky, X-Files-like direction the display took. Gone was wonder of the ‘Gate and the excitement of original worlds and cultures. It became too mottled down in Earthbound stories of corruption and conspiracies.

With Richard Dean Anderson decreasing his portion, and with Micheal Shanks absent, it fell to Amanda Tapping and Chris Assume to carry the season. They did an admirable job, but the team dynamics are what made this prove what it was and you can’t support those dynamics with only 50% of said team.

I have all the seasons, so I had to have this one, But I’m anxiously waiting for Season 7!

This season starts with a bang, following the last season shooting of Agent Elle Greenway, and completes that tale arc. The actors are again all in worthy accomplish and give honorable performances. “Flee Blues” 10/10: A hilarious episode. The funniest one on the entire disc area. Chris invites everyone on a yacht that belongs to one of his father’s friends, as they disappear to observe some celebrated icebergs. Unfortunately, nobody but Chris and his grandfather know how to relax properly, and everyone else goes berserk; especially Sonic. Even Knuckles gets keen as Chuck, Chris’ grandfather, devises plans to try and fetch Sonic. Will Sonic’s friends succeed in capturing him? Will Eggman select advantage of this status?

“A Dastardly Deed” 8/10: This episode is comely pleasurable and E-77 is certainly cute. Eggman’s in a edifying mood, so he sends E-77, Lucky, to earn the last chaos emerald; and maybe nab the others while he’s at it. Lucky is a relatively harmless robot but, as the name suggests, he has luck in spades. Chris tags along, and both he and Knuckles obtain a deal to work together with Eggman, in which Eggman agrees. Is Eggman really proper about helping them?

“Countdown To Chaos” 8/10: An intense episode. Eggman obtains six of the seven chaos emeralds, and uses their destructive power to power his ultimate machine. He and Sonic duke it out, with many others enthusiastic. Who will come by? Will Sonic and friends finally collect assist to their hold world?
